Opera Version 56: New reading view for Android

With the update to version 56, the browser Opera for Android brings an improved reading view – regardless of the respective website.

With version 56, Opera for Android offers a new reading function. It is independent of the websites accessed and adapted to the mobile devices used in each case. As soon as you activate it, the reading mode converts the respective pages into a simpler format: “It gives the articles a clearer form by converting the font into an optimally readable one and the menu bar and displays of the website remain hidden.”

Opera 56 is now available in the Google Play store. The new function is intended to eliminate problems with tightly packed layouts and font sizes that are too small, according to the blog post . Continuous texts are shown in the Roboto font, headings in Roboto Slab, which is also reminiscent of reading newspaper articles thanks to the serifs. Opera had users tested before the decision and obtained feedback, which also determined the font size. According to Opera, the chosen font was the best for people with poor eyesight. Senior Vice President, Peter Wallman, says: “Our goal with the new reading mode was to put content at the center of interest.” Distraction should be avoided.

Last year, Opera had given Android users a new browser look – more colorful and minimalist than before. This can also be used to change the color of the Android dark mode. Since then, the “Reject” option has been set for push messages by default. A crypto wallet is integrated, as is a cookie dialog blocker.

The current web browser version 64 also has a tracking blocker . However, it must be activated in the settings. A VPN service that was originally introduced for Android has made the leap into the web version.

According to Opera, the number of users of the browser increased by 40 percent in the second half of 2019 compared to the same period in the previous year.
