Why and how to prevent your device from “freezing”

If your cell phone is locked and does not work or is too slow, (maybe the screen or the physical buttons were turned off or does not respond ) it is surely a software failure, which is generally easy to solve with the tips below .

Why my cell phone freezes

Commonly, the cell phone freezes or locks up due to a problem in an application or the Android system itself. Maybe you installed a failed app, still in development or an APK of dubious reputation. Or it may be a temporary or permanent Android system defect (usually the former).

What to do if my cell phone is locked and does not respond

Restart

This is the simplest and most effective solution when the cell phone is hung or has been locked on the home screen or in any other app.

If  the cell phone screen freezes  and you cannot use the normal restart (from the option that appears when you press and hold the power button), you will have to do a forced restart (as long as the phone has enough battery). The process varies from brand to brand. For example:

Samsung Galaxy S6 : Press the power buttons and decrease volume at the same time and for 10 to 20 seconds.

Motorola Moto E4 : Press the power button for 10 or 20 seconds.

In both cases, release the buttons when the brand logo appears.

Some computers may also accept a forced shutdown. That is, by holding down the power and volume up button (or the volume down button) for 5 or 10 seconds.

Please make sure the phone has at least 5% battery before restarting, or else it might not turn on.

Most modern phones no longer have a removable battery, but if your phone has this advantage, you will only have to remove the battery if your Android gets stuck .

Uninstall the application that freezes the cell phone

An app or game can be the root of the problem. If you can detect which one, you just have to uninstall.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to determine exactly which application may be freezing the phone. However, what you can do is enter the mobile safe mode. If you notice that the problem is NOT REPEATED in this mode, it means that any of the applications that YOU installed cause the failure.

If this is the case, you will have to uninstall the applications that you installed one by one until you verify that the problem disappears in the normal operating mode. It will be faster if you can remember since when you had the problem and what apps you installed back then.

If it is a Samsung cell phone, as soon as the start-up or start-up process begins, keep pressing the volume down button until you are on the home screen with the legend “Safe Mode” in some corner. Check this link for other brands.

Factory reset

If the problem occurs every so often and you have no idea why the cell phone hangs or licks , the reset may be the permanent solution. However, this procedure will erase all the data on the device, so be careful to make a backup if possible.

After restarting the phone in the previous way, you can probably go to the system settings and use the option “Restore defaults” or “factory”.

You can also force a reset by entering the recovery mode of the cell phone. With the phone turned off, press and hold the Power button and increase the volume (and the home button, in the case of some Samsung). The buttons will be released when the brand logo appears. Once in the recovery mode (image above), scroll to the “wipe data factory reset” option with the volume buttons and choose it with the power button.

If the phone does not start in recovery mode as indicated, please do an online search for the model, because in some cases it may be slightly different.

I reset my cell phone and it keeps freezing

It may be due to faulty Android software or perhaps a physical or hardware problem (some component is loose or does not have a stable electrical contact). If it’s the former, it could be fixed by reinstalling the phone’s firmware, updating or installing an alternative ROM. As for the second, you will have to go to a competent technical support.
