With the development of online life, it becomes more and more important to maintain accounts in various services. If eight or ten years ago, a lost profile was not a reason for panic, now it is really dangerous. Many people use a variety of Yandex resources: applications “Money”, “Yandex. Taxi ”, someone writes articles on“ Yandex. Zen ”and monetizes them. It is a real tragedy to allow hacking in such a situation, so the developers offer new, more reliable methods of verification. How two-factor authentication works

Two-factor authentication involves checking a user not with a permanent password from Yandex, but with a one-time password, which is valid only for a short time. The fact is that there are programs that read everything that you write from the keyboard, so even the most complex and strange code can be declassified. It is absolutely pointless to steal instant and short-term combinations – they are canceled as soon as the account owner logs in (and also if he does not perform it for a long time).

How two-factor authentication works

How it all works:

  1. The Yandex.Key application is installed on the phone, which must be launched whenever you want to enter any of the child services.
    Authorization in the Yandex.Key app
  2. It offers a set of numbers – you need to copy, go to “Mail” or “Money” (or where you were going to go) and paste them into a special window.
  3. If you want to open, for example, mail on a PC, you still need to first go to the “Key” application and select the QR code as a way to verify your identity, and then point your phone camera at it. PC authorization via QR-code

Of course, it takes some time and is a little annoying, but you will be calm about your profile. If you get bored, you can return to the previous password login method.

Setting up two-factor authentication

Now let’s take a closer look at how to enable two-factor authentication in Yandex services: mail, e-wallet, and others. To do this, you will need two devices at once: a smartphone and a computer (or tablet, laptop, etc.).

  1. Let’s start by installing the Yandex.Klyuch mobile application and adding an account. You can download the application in the Google Play and App Store catalogs. After installation, you will be asked to add a profile, but do not proceed to this step yet.

  2. On a PC or laptop (preferably your personal one, on which you constantly work) open “Yandex. Passport”. If you have never seen this section before, then first go to the mail and look in the right corner where your photo (or the picture replacing it) is shown. Click on it and select “Account Management” – you will be on the desired page.
  3. Under the heading “Passwords and Authorization”, you are immediately prompted to set up two-factor authentication. Click on this link.
  4. At this stage, confirmation of the phone number is required: by default, you will be sent an SMS to the SIM card that you specified when registering with Yandex. Check the set of numbers carefully and make sure everything matches.

  8. After you have completed the settings, a QR code should appear on the “Passports” page. Go back to the Key app on your phone and click Add Account.
  9. Point your smartphone camera at the QR code or click “Show Key” and enter it into the form on the mobile application. Then drive in the invented PIN-code there to synchronize the devices.
