Why do we need services in Windows and which ones can be disabled

By disabling various processes, removing unnecessary programs, users mainly pursue 2 goals. This is the freeing up of additional space on the hard disk, as well as speeding up the work of a computer or laptop.

What services can be disabled in Windows

Multiple processes and services load the system. Accordingly, the fewer they work, the less the load goes. But before disabling services, you need to understand what it is all about, and what a rash action can lead to. Not all services can be deactivated. Some of them, if disconnected, can lead to serious negative consequences.

What is service

A service in an operating system, be it Windows 10 or Windows 7, is considered to be different applications that perform certain functions in the operating system. The service comes into operation at the same time as the OS starts and runs in the background. It does not interact with the user himself.

To find out which services are running at the moment, you can open the Task Manager, or use the tab of the same name in the “Administration” section.

Administration Tab in Control Panel

If we speak in a language that is understandable for everyone, then services act as an intermediate link between the program and the OS. Without services, no program or application on your computer can run. One program, when starting and functioning, can use several services at the same time.

In this case, the services themselves are created by the system or installed software. In the list of running processes, you can usually observe services generated by antivirus programs, video cards, etc.

This gives a lot of insight into why Windows operating systems need services. Nothing will work without them.

Why disable them

Before you start disabling unnecessary services in Windows 10, you need to understand why users are setting such a goal at all. After all, it was literally just said about the impossibility of functioning of certain programs without appropriate services. But since users do not use all programs, they do not need some services either.

There is a specific list of what services can potentially be disabled in Windows 7 and the newer version of Windows 10. Their deactivation is associated with one important feature.

IMPORTANT. All services are processes running on the system. Each of them consumes resources and eats up RAM.

View the used RAM in the "Performance" section

As a result, it turns out that if you disable unnecessary services in Windows 7 and 10, as in other versions, you can save these resources and direct them to more important tasks.

So it turns out that disabling various services within the Windows 10 operating system is done in order to improve the performance of the system, that is, the entire computer. And the more processes are deactivated, the faster the PC will function.

Yes, if this is an initially powerful machine, then the user will not feel any special changes. But it feels good on weak PCs and laptops.

If you realize that disabling the service will really help to optimize your PC and your Windows 10 PC can run faster, then it really makes sense. Otherwise, it is better not to risk it.

Further directly to the question of which services can potentially be disabled so as not to harm Windows 10 and not provoke certain problems.

Do’s and Don’ts

Correct disabling of really unnecessary services in Windows 10 and older operating systems provides for the deactivation of only those processes that the user does not need to work with a PC or laptop.

Deactivation of a particular service associated with an application is performed only on the condition that you are not using that particular program. Some of them can be turned off without any fear. It is strongly not recommended to turn off others. This is especially true for services related to antivirus software. If you stop them, then the antivirus itself will turn into a helpless and useless tool.

The list of prohibited for deactivation includes services generated by driver programs associated with Intel, AMD, etc. Plus, everything related to the network also rightly falls into this list.

Windows sound service

If we talk about system services, then the meaning is similar. Turn off what you don’t need or don’t use. Not everyone knows, but inside Windows 10 there is a virtual machine. With its help, the OS is launched directly inside the operating system itself. Not everyone uses this feature, and therefore this is a great opportunity to improve productivity. To do this, it is enough to refuse to work everything related to Hyper-V.

Shutting down the Hyper-V platform

If you decide to turn off unnecessary services while working on your Windows 10 computer or laptop, you can just start from a virtual machine. By turning off several services, you can free up a decent amount of resources and direct them to more important and necessary tasks.

There are 6 different services associated with a virtual machine, that is, Hyper-V, in Windows 10. Namely:

  • finishing work as a guest;
  • data exchange;
  • virtual machine sessions;
  • time synchronization;
  • remote desktop virtualization;
  • heart rate service.

This list of potentially unnecessary services within Windows 10 can be deactivated in any user-friendly order. The main thing is to check that all 6 of them are disabled.

If you are working with not the newest laptop, and therefore there is no fingerprint scanner or light sensor in it, these services standard for Windows 10 can also be safely disabled. Here we are talking about 3 services:

  • monitoring sensors;
  • sensor data;
  • the service of the sensors themselves.

Although it is recommended here beforehand to check if there is a fall controller on the hard disk of your computer. They are even present on some HDDs. This sensor allows you to turn off the power supply to the drive in the event of a fall of the computer and thereby minimize the risk of data loss.

There is also a biometric service. It is directly related to the operation of the fingerprint scanner, and is also related to the procedure for logging into the system through the camera. If the user does not use the face authentication method to start the computer, and also does not want to trust the OS with his own biometric data, the services provided can be safely deactivated.

Windows biometric service

Thinking about how to speed up Windows 10, many decide to do it by simply disabling various services they don’t need. But which of them can be considered superfluous, the question is largely individual.

Those who care about the issue of network security can, without a shadow of a doubt, proceed to deactivate several services at once:

  • Geographical position. With its help, the system can determine your current geographic coordinates, after which the corresponding information is received by related applications, programs, etc.
  • Services of functionality for connected users and telemetry. In general, it is advised to turn it off, because in many ways it is with the help of such a tool that the operating system monitors its users.
  • Secondary entrance.
    Secondary Login Service
  • Remote registry.
  • NetBIOS support module.
  • Ancillary IP service.

All the last sections are related to remote work and remote access.

There are a few more examples of what can be turned off without fear of harming the operating system.

  • Fax. Relevant for those who do not use fax while working with a computer or laptop.
  • Seal. It’s about the print manager. Accordingly, when a printer is not connected to the computer, then there is no point in the work of this background process.
  • BitLocker Drive Encryption. When the encryption function of the drive, that is, the hard disk, is not used, then the service is not needed.
  • Xbox Live service. If the user is not an Xbox Live subscriber and does not have a Microsoft game console, this service will naturally be unnecessary and unnecessary.
  • Bluetooth support. It is quite logical that, provided that Bluetooth is not used on the computer, then the background process for its operation can be confidently deactivated.
  • Internet sharing. The service is called ICS. It makes sense to keep it active only when the laptop is used as a tool for distributing the Internet using Wi-Fi technology. In other situations, it is not needed.
  • Key isolation. In most cases, it turns off without a doubt. It is relevant to leave only on condition that this or that cryptographic equipment is connected to the computer. And this is not so common.
  • Client license. If you do not use the Microsoft Store, then the presented service becomes meaningless and unnecessary.

What is needed from this and what is not, each user decides on an individual basis. Disabling directly depends on which of the services are necessary, and which have never been used at all.

Disconnection methods

Next to the question of how you can remove a particular service in Windows 10.

There are 5 different ways available at once. They are implemented using:

  • Services menu;
    Stopping a service through the service manager
  • PowerShell;
    Working with Services with Powershell
  • command line;
  • system configuration;
    Service management through the system configuration window
  • special programs.

Before turning off unnecessary services in Windows 10, you need to consider each method presented, and choose the most convenient and suitable one for yourself.

Services Menu

The easiest and most affordable way to do self-removal of services in Windows 7 and a more recent and up-to-date version of Windows 10 is through the corresponding menu. It is enough to open the desired tab and deactivate the process.

Since disabling services is most often done to improve performance, and Windows 10 has the most often unnecessary processes, then it is more logical for a novice user to start with this method.

To enter and deactivate unnecessary services running in the background in Windows 10, you must:

  • Start “Task Manager”. To do this, just right-click on the taskbar and go to the “Task Manager” section. Or press the combination of the Ctrl, Alt and Delete buttons.
    The shortcut keys Ctrl + Alt + Delete
  • Open the “Services” tab and click on the “Open Services” button at the bottom. It is immediately important to understand that it is useless to stop them using the dispatcher. At the next restart of the operating system, they turn on again.
    Services Tab in Task Manager
  • Right-click on “My Computer” and go to the “Manage” tab. Here, when a new PC control window opens, click on the “Services and Applications” tab, and then select “Services” directly.
  • This allows you to open all the processes that run within the operating system. You can find out about their current activity status by looking at the “Status” tab. If it says “Running” here, this process is active and can potentially be turned off.
  • To deactivate an unused service, the cursor moves to the name, and a double click is made. A new window appears, where you just need to click “Stop”.
    Service stop button
  • Waiting for the status to change to Stopped. Now, opposite the “Startup type” item, select the “Disabled” option from the drop-down list.
    Disable a service in the service manager

It remains only to apply the changes with the corresponding button and exit by clicking on OK.

By analogy, all those services that the user considered unnecessary and unnecessary are disabled.

PowerShell

The next way to go to the menu where the active and available services on Windows 10 are presented, for later shutdown, involves using the PowerShell tool.

In fact, it is an improved command line that supports a large number of functions and modes. Thanks to PowerShell’s capabilities, you can also disable services.

  • Open the Start menu and start typing power in the search bar until you see Powershell in the list of options.
    Found Windows PoweShell in Search
  • Run the application as administrator by right-clicking and clicking the appropriate line from the menu that opens.
  • Add the get-service command. This will display all the services that are available within the operating system.
  • All processes are displayed in the list, regardless of their current activity status.
  • If “Running” is written opposite the service, then it is running and is currently running. The word “Stopped” accordingly indicates a disabled process.
    Using get-service command in Powershell
  • To stop a particular service, it is necessary to register the “stop-service” command followed by the name of the process itself, separated by a space. Moreover, in the form in which it is indicated in the “PowerShell” window.

Be prepared for an error when attempting to deactivate. It means the inability to disable the process, since it is associated with other running applications.

Command line

Many people continue to actively use the capabilities of the command line. This is also an effective tool.

To start it, you can simultaneously click on Win and X. A window will open where you need to select “Command line (administrator)”.

Run command line as administrator

A command prompt window will appear on the computer screen, in which net stop is written, and the name of the service itself, separated by a space.

ATTENTION. If in PowerShell the command “stop-service” is written with a hyphen, then on the command line in the phrase “net stop” the hyphen is not needed.

Net stop command on command line

If you are not sure of the correct name of the service to be disconnected, simply open the Administration tab.

system configuration

Another way to disable.

Here you need to press a combination of Win and R. In the window that appears, write msconfig and click on “OK”. Now open the “Services” tab, where all the processes relevant to your operating system will be displayed.

Deactivating them is extremely simple. You just need to uncheck the boxes in front of the names of those services that you do not need. Then the “Apply” button, and the process ends by pressing the “OK” button.

Disabling services in the system configuration window

Third party programs

Alternatively, you can use a program to quickly disable services in Windows 10. It eliminates the need to manually search for and deactivate something.

A striking example of effective third-party software is the Easy Service Optimizer program. It’s free, and allows you to turn off all unnecessary things in just a few taps.

The program does not require installation. After starting, a list of services will be generated in the window that can be disabled in one of several modes.

The optimal solution for a beginner. Moreover, the use of such software is considered safer than manual shutdown, where you can do too much and significantly spoil the performance of the operating system.
