A piece of news that fans of the most famous Custom ROM from all over the android world will not like. And it is that CyanogenMod 14 will never arrive. This is the version based on Android 7.0 Nougat, and apparently different problems with it have made the development team decide to finish work on it. There will be no CyanogenMod based on Android 7.0. However, Android 7.1 is already working for CyanogenMod 14.1.
Without CyanogenMod 14 and Android 7.0 Nougat
It seems we are definitely out of Android 7.0 Nougat on its fork of CyanogenMod. The CyanogenMod 14 version would have been definitively canceled, according to CyanogenMod Italy, a community website that does not cite official sources, but given the community nature of this Custom ROM, it is reliable because they seem to speak with enough knowledge of the internal development of said new version.
Apparently, the problems that would have led to the cancellation would have to do with the efforts that Google has made to avoid security flaws derived from a problem with the hardware. To prevent a security breach of one hardware element from giving access to the entire system, Google has divided everything that has to do with hardware management into different elements. It is an obvious and logical step, but it complicates life for CyanogenMod 14 developers who have found that devices that make use of HAL1 (hardware abstraction layer) have problems when using the camera.
As stated directly from CyanogenMod, you cannot continue with a development that cannot ensure compatibility with all hardware in a final version.
CyanogenMod 14.1 would be the future
This might seem apocalyptic, but the abandonment of CyanogenMod 14 isn’t as tragic as it might sound either. After all, the team has already started working on CyanogenMod 14.1, the version of the operating system that will be based on Android 7.1 Nougat. It is working based on the AOSP project for Android 7.1. If you still get a bit lost with this CyanogenMod, and something of the OnePlus sounds or something like that, you must first understand the differences between Cyanogen and CyanogenMod. Be that as it may, Android Nougat will arrive in one way or another to devices, it seems. The team is working on a fix for the HAL issue, and we’ll see if there are fewer issues with this new version.
