Sometimes the speaker on the iPhone stops working: it is impossible to hear the music, the interlocutor in the messenger, or the voice acting of the video. There are several reasons for this, and we will now talk about them, and also figure out how to troubleshoot.

What signs indicate that the iPhone speaker is not working well
It is very easy to understand that it is the speaker on the iPhone that is not working:
- there is no sound in the video;
- music or voice messages are played silently;
- notifications and calls are not accompanied by a characteristic melody.
In addition, the sound may not be completely absent, or disappear, then appear, undergo various distortions, hide behind noise, etc.
Why iPhone speaker doesn’t work
Now let’s take a step-by-step look at the causes of the sound problems:
- Silent mode is on. Check if you have switched the device to the “Do not disturb” mode (the button is on the side, on the case). If you do not hear only the ringtone, then, most likely, this is the case. Also check if you have muted the sound with the volume keys – then you will not hear anything at all, including during a conversation.
- Incorrect settings. Try going to Settings – General – Accessibility – Audiovisual. Pay attention to the item “Mono audio”, especially if the left speaker does not work on the iPhone 7. Activate this function with the slider, and you will immediately notice that the sound is now not only in the upper speaker, but also in the lower one.
- Audio devices are connected. When a speaker suddenly stops working, it is worth checking if any devices for audio playback are connected to it: speakers, headphones, a multimedia system, a radio tape recorder, etc. will not function. Try turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to accurately interrupt the connection with the third party device.
- System crash. Very often, small debris and dust gets clogged into the headphone jacks and “confuses” the system in this way, which interprets foreign objects as a device. This often happens on the iPhone 6, iPhone 11, iPhone XR, where there are rather large openings for devices and the recognition system does not work very well. Take something sharp but not metallic, such as a canapé skewer, and clean the indentations (only without any detergent). If you are a frequent visitor to questionable sites and download something from there, then a virus downloaded by carelessness can “eat” the audio library files necessary for reading sound extensions. Reset your device to default settings.
- Broken speaker. If any noises appeared, the speaker began to work quietly, the interlocutor was hard to hear, then the membrane itself could fail. This is facilitated by vigorous shaking of the phone, splashing water, juice, tea or coffee on it, as well as impacts on any surface (sometimes even soft). In this case, you will have to contact a specialist to disassemble the gadget and see what happened.
- Broken sound card cable. This cable connects the board to the speaker, it is very sensitive to all kinds of influences and is one of the most vulnerable parts of the iPhone. It is also changed in the workshop.
If you still have an active warranty, you can also write to Apple Support and ask why the sound is not working. Perhaps, according to the description of the problem, they will understand what the matter is and advise how to fix everything.
How to test the speaker on iPhone
After you’ve tried to fix the problem, let’s find out how much it helped:
- Follow the path: “Settings” – “Sound” – “Calls and notifications”.
- Move the marker towards a higher volume.
- Rate how well you hear the melody.
Also in the App Store there are special applications for diagnosing the health of the iPhone and their performance: put your device to the test and find out if everything is in order.
If nothing worked
In this case, you are dealing either with a material breakdown, or with a factory defect, or with an error at the programming stage (low-quality firmware). Collect all the documents for the phone, all the devices that came with the kit, the packaging for them, the warranty card and the purchase receipt. Go to the store where the iPhone was sold to you and explain the situation. If the speaker breakdown is due to some technical problem, you will have to either fix it or replace it.
